Tour de States - a cross-country bike trip benefitting the American Cancer Society

“I want to ride a bike across the country.”

When Skyler Kern told his friends about his goal, they laughed in his face. He couldn’t help but laugh a little himself. After all, it was a hurdle that couldn’t be cleared without a great deal of physical, emotional, and psychological strain. His optimism was met with replies of “You’re kidding, right?” and “You’re going to die.” But for Skyler, their skepticism only warmed the bike seat.

A desert, another desert, and maybe just a little more desert.

When leaving San Angelo, our couch surfer Jess said farewell with these words:

"You'd better enjoy these trees, there won't be any more for a while."

After a quaint stay in Midland, Texas, we rode twenty miles to Odessa to get our fill of movies in before hitting the extensive, drudging scenery of west Texas and beyond. Since after Odessa we went to Mentone and found God, and Cory grabbed dibs about the God Blog, I'll just describe our adventures in Odessa and skip to the desert. Leaving a massive hole in my story. So deal with it.

Towering over my parents, I am the tallest person in my family. I am 5'5.

What do you expect the greatest challenge to be?
I hear I may be destroyed by an 18-wheeler while riding through Texas.

Who is a personal hero of yours?
My grandfather. He took nothing and made it into something. The world claims that's not possible.

What is your biggest fear?
Taking advantage of what I've been given.
