the story
“I want to ride a bike across the country.”

When Skyler Kern told his friends about his goal, they laughed in his face. He couldn’t help but laugh a little himself. After all, it was a hurdle that couldn’t be cleared without a great deal of physical, emotional, and psychological strain. His optimism was met with replies of “You’re kidding, right?” and “You’re going to die.” But for Skyler, their skepticism only warmed the bike seat.

Once in a lifetime

When I first talked to my parents about this trip I told them that this is one of those once in a lifetime opportunities that I just couldn’t pass up. That is not something I said to get them to let me go its how I really feel about what we will be experiencing while traveling across the nation. My portion of the trip will be starting differently than anyone else because I am walking for graduation on May 3. For those of you who can read a calendar that’s the day after the trip starts. I will walk across the stage in the O-Dome around 11am and once the ceremony is done I am jumping into a car with my brother and his wife who will drop me off on the side of the road where I will be picked up by the rest of the crew. So while everyone else on this trip is doing this awesome trip during their summer break, I will be starting out my post collegiate life with this trip. With that knowledge all I can think is how this is an awesome way to start the rest of my life, and with that kind of thought in my mind how could I pass up this once in a lifetime opportunity.

Skyler

Age: 19, Hometown: Leesburg, FL, Major: Philosophy
Skyler Kern is out to prove that adventures still exist. In the search to do something epic, he came up with the idea of biking across America.

What's an interesting fact about you?
Towering over my parents, I am the tallest person in my family. I am 5'5.

What do you expect the greatest challenge to be?
I hear I may be destroyed by an 18-wheeler while riding through Texas.

Who is a personal hero of yours?
My grandfather. He took nothing and made it into something. The world claims that's not possible.

What is your biggest fear?
Taking advantage of what I've been given.
