The Journey's End
Posted on Jun 04, 2009 by Kaylyn

"…I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams, I hope.”- Shawshank Redemption

3 bikers, 3 bikes, and 3 crew college kids diving into the Pacific Ocean, fully clothed and going nuts.

That’s the scene that the beach goers of Huntington Beach, California are about to witness in two days, one couch surfer, and 150 miles from now.

That’s right folks, we’ve hiked through the New Mexico Mountains, trudged through the Arizona desert, and crossed our last state line, finding ourselves ahead of schedule,  surrounded by the  Golden State, one day's ride from the glorious Pacific Ocean.

The sheer closeness of the end of our saga is, to say the least, surreal.

For the past 33 days we’ve become accustomed to a general pattern of life:

7:30- Maxx’s alarm goes off; he and I get up, followed closely by Nick and Kirky, then Cory, and then, about 20 minutes and some prodding later, Skyler

8:15- We make our way to breakfast somewhere nearby, unless of course we have complimentary breakfast (a huge plus!). We order and talk about the plan for the day: how many miles, the route, where we’re staying that night

8:45- The guys eat their breakfast at a rate and an amount that I’m always astonished by, especially Maxx, who we’ve dubbed the human disposal, since anything we don’t finish, he will.

10:00- We pack up our stuff, bring the bags to the car and do a double check of the room. As the guys prep for the bike (sunscreen, outfits, water, and more snacking), the crew packs and cleans the Camel. I’ve become so efficient at packing a trunk that I secretly dub myself a ‘Car-Tetris’ master.

10:30- We check out of the hotel and head out. The bikers depart and the crew stops at a gas station nearby to stock up on snacks, refill all water containers, and fuel the Camel. We then proceed about 15 miles down the route, park, and chill until the riders come. The bikers, meanwhile, are pedaling. A lot.

12:00- After covering about 20-30 miles, the temperature is too hot for biking, so we find a food place and settle down for a bit. We share interesting parts of the day that the two groups (drivers and bikers) have encountered. More food to fuel the guys, reading, talking, goofing around (which usually involves seeing if we can toss food into each others mouths from long distances…entertainment when no tv is found)

2:00- Bikers head off again, and the general stop and go 15 mile pattern holds

6 to as late as 11:00- We get into the destination, and find a hotel (or our couch surfer’s house). We try to get a discount rate, then head to the room, unpack the car, shower, eat, and then pass out. Day complete.

It’s weird to think that tomorrow (or today, depending on when this blog posts) will be the last time that I’ll complete this pattern.

It’s become a weird way of life, comforting in it’s discomfort and oddly addictive in it’s excitement.

Don’t get me wrong, we’ve had our tough moments: The car breaking down in Ebro, the never-ending desert heat, Louisiana roads, The Meltdown in Willcox, Arizona, the ridiculous amount of flats, Nick’s cactus encounter, Cory’s list of lost things, The Meltdown in Willcox.

But, as hard as those things were, I’m gonna miss the simplicity of life on the road. I’ll miss the beauty of the mountains and the emptiness of the desert. I’ll miss laughing with the guys about things only we’d get. I’ll miss the people we’ve met, some crazy, some amazing, none disappointing. I’ll miss singing in the car with Kirky and Cory to silly Disney songs. I’ll miss my weird sandal tan and sun burnt lips. I’ll miss funky smelling hotel rooms (well, sort of) and packing the Camel. I’ll miss our amazing couch surfing friends, the random help of strangers, and the sound of the bike wheels turning on the road.

But most of all, I’ll miss the adventure.

I don't believe this is the official last blog, but just in case, we'd like to thank you all for following us on our journey. Without you, the 2200 plus miles would not have been possible.

While the Pacific Ocean will be a glorious end to our bike adventure, we’ll always remember this: It’s good to have an end to journey towards, but it’s the journey that matters in the end’
